Mariah Carey’s Emotions album is a great album. However, with the exception of the title track, the record has been widely forgotten.
My ears reject modern pop radio. So, instead of complaining about Rich Homie Quan, I have launched special Trini Trent TV segments focused on music history!
I cued up my iTunes, and listened to classics, hidden gems and personal favourites. Among them was Emotions.
Released in 1991, Emotions was Carey’s followup to her breakthrough debut. Yet, despite earning her number one song and a performance slot at the 1992 Grammy Awards, the album underwhelmed critics.
It was hard out there for a budding diva in a Whitney Houston world.
Regardless, Emotions is an impressive body of work. Indeed, with her stunning range out in full force and her songwriting telling stories far beyond her years, Emotions is an underrated classic.
This is Trini Trent TV’s Back In Times series. I will use it to reflect on past releases and offer artists on advice on how they can learn from the projects.
Expect future instalments of Back in Times during the coming weeks. Submit your requests in the comment section and share your views on the music as well as my commentary.
