The 2015 Soul Train Awards have aired and to my surprise, the BET production was quite enjoyable. Yes, I said “BET” and “enjoyable” in the same sentence without a “not” between them.
Among the performers at the event were Fantasia, who sang Whitney Houston’s “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” and Karyn White’s “Superwoman” in tribute to songwriter Babyface. She would have easily been the highlight of the show if Jill Scott had not also belted a medley of her own hits as she accepted the special Lady of Soul award.
Of course, there were a few hiccups. Winners Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Omarion were all absent from the Soul Train Music Awards, along with several other big names in R&B music.
Why do performers beg for Grammy Awards yet ignore Soul Train? Is a trophy from the foundation of your artistry not good enough?
