Celine Dion’s talent and impact ranks her among the greatest singers of all time but when compared to her peers Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, she has always been the least interesting. Whether as a ramification of her lack of creative insight or an enormous sense of entitlement, her music is generally bland. For example, her new song, “Loved Me Back to Life”.

Instead of developing a new refreshing sound for her first album in six years, Loved Me Back to Life, Dion has once again proven that she is probably the most glorified karaoke singer of her generation. A boastful fan of Adele, Dion channels the sound of her British counterpart’s 21 on the Sia-penned title track of her album.

“There was a point in my career I can remember for maybe 10 years it was all about, ‘Who’s gonna hold a note longer? Who’s gonna sing the note higher?’ And that’s what the industry demanded,” Dion explained to Billboard. “It’s not that we were in competition with each other. None of the singers who were doing that stuff wanted that… It has to evolve at some point, even if it’s just for yourself.”

In other words, Dion has adapted her singing style to work on today’s radio trends but instead of redefining a lane for herself, she just followed the approach that made Adele hugely successful on the Adult Contemporary airwaves in the last two years. How much are you willing to bet that the Dion sang “Loved Me Back to Life” almost exactly like the Sia demo?

Further stressing her shameless lack of creativity, Dion admitted that she still isn’t writing her own songs. “I’ve been gone for six years. There’s a time where you think, ‘Do you think people will write songs for me?'” she stated. “I’m at the mercy of the songs because I don’t write my material. But I could not believe what I was hearing.”

“I’m not trying to reinvent myself, I don’t want people to think, ‘This is a brand new Celine,'” Dion continued.” but I am at a place in my career where I’m 45, I’m at the peak of my life, and I’ve never felt like this before. I want to have a good time.” So, if her life is so amazing, why couldn’t she put her feelings on paper? After all, she has been watching people do that for her throughout her career.

In addition to Sia, Ne-Yo, Babyface, Tricky Stewart, and Swedish trio Play Production have all happily crafted songs for Dion’s Love Me Back to Life. The album will arrive on November 5 and I guarantee you that the next Now compilation won’t sound this good.
