Well, you can’t say I didn’t warn you that Lady Gaga was about to take over the media. Moments after announcing the title of her new single, “Applause”, the singer-songwriter unveiled its accompanying cover art, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, and shared key details about the highly anticipated music.

“I’ll tell you that it is very fun,” Gaga said of the sound of “Applause”, the video for which was filmed a week ago in Los Angeles, under the direction of Van Lamsweerde and Matadin from the Haus of Gaga. “It’s full of happiness, because what I’m saying in the song essentially is that I live for the applause. I live for the way you cheer and scream for me. Give me that thing that I love. Put your hands up, make them touch.”

Co-written by DJ White Shadow, “Applause” is an ode to Gaga’s relationship with her fans. “In my heart of hearts as I was writing, I knew that if I asked [the fans] to cheer for me before I sang or if I alluded to the fact that they would cheer for me before I sang….They do that all the time for me; before I even open my mouth, the fans start cheering for me, so this exclamation.”

“Give me that thing that I love. Give it to me. I’m ready, start the music,” reads some of the “Applause” lyrics according to Gaga. “I’m from New York. I’ve worked since I was a five-year-old to be a performer; all my life. I deserve to be here. I’m ready.”

Gaga’s “Applause” will premiere on August 19 and she will sing it live at the 2013 MTV VMA on August 25 at the Barclay’s Center of Brooklyn, New York. Her ARTPOP album will be available for pre-orders on the former date and is set to arrive in stores on November 11.
