Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban star in ‘Neptune’s Daughter’.

Did you know that the popular holiday tune “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” is widely regarded as a song about rape?

“Baby, it’s Cold Outside” was written by Frank Loesser, and first recorded by by Ricardo Montalban and Esther Williams in the film Neptune’s Daughter. Although the song is often associated with the holiday season, the lyrics actually describe a scenario of date rape.

Pay close attention to the following lines:

    Williams: “I simply must go.”

    Montalban: “Baby, it’s cold outside.”

    Williams: “The answer is no.”

    Montalban: “Baby, it’s cold outside.”

Williams: “I’ve got to go home.”

Williams also suspects that she has been drugged and asks, “what’s in this drink?” Clearly, the “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” is not about the playful scene that many assume. Even when the roles were reversed by Red Skelton and Betty Garrett, the message is quite alarming.
