Mariah Carey poses for a promo pic for her new album.

Mariah Carey is a diva on a mission to revive the genres that she holds closest to her heart. During a special conference call with music industry leaders, including The Lava Lizard, the legendary singer exclusively revealed that her new album is a testament to the power of Hip-Hop and R&B in this era of Dance music.

While chatting about her goals with this new album, which is due in the fall, Carey noted that she misses the days of the 1970s and 1980s when music had meaning. However, unlike her younger peer Melanie Amaro, who mixed meaningful lyrics with Dance production in an effort to score a mainstream hit with ‘Don’t Fail Me Now’, Carey wants to achieve success on her own terms.

“It would be incredible if we could bring that days when R&B records didn’t have to crossover and just be hits on their own,” Carey stated with her signature milky voice. “I remember back when those records were the soundtracks of people’s lives.”

Yet, Carey isn’t sniping at her contemporaries who have made attempts to crossover. Rather, she simply wants struggling R&B artists to return to their former glory. “It makes me sad that there are so many great R&B artists out there that don’t get the chances that they should.”

Quite hilariously, Carey spoke about the pressures to conform to the Dance music trends that she faced while recording her still-untitled new album and politely rejected any ideas that she would sellout. “I recorded like 120-something songs,” she joked, “and I remember when I was pregnant with dem babies they only responded to the songs with the classic R&B feel.”

Carey does, however, have a few new ideas for her upcoming comeback album. Although she refused to name any performers because she didn’t want her material to be imitated, she did indicate that she finally got the chance to collaborate with artists with whom she had planned to work for many years.

Additionally, Carey positively responded to questions regarding the possibility of a duet with Drake or Frank Ocean and revealed her excitement to work with the “shapers” of the current industry. One such young artist is Meek Mill, and she nabbed a collaboration with him and Rick Ross for her new single, ‘Triumphant (Get ‘Em)’.

Several artists have been trying to revive the dying R&B genre but will Carey be the woman who I once predicted to save the genre? That remains to be seen but one thing is certain: she is determined to make her mark and open doors for the next generation.

    Thoughts?

If anybody has the ability to revive Urban music it’s most certainly Mariah Carey

    • RichiAngelo

I guess…. there’s nothing extraordinary about “Triumphant” that can bring back R&B. I hope she knows what she’s doing.

    • DRB

While I agree with what she said, she isn’t doing it with Triumphant. Elle Varner, Jazmine Sullivan, Frank Ocean are making music far superior music and it deserves to be heard so yes. But her putting out crap isn’t going to help. She has the natural ability to crossover without even trying but again, good music is good music. And crap is crap.

    • DRB

What did she say about Frank and Drake?

    • moses

Thanks for this! I just hope she doesn’t disappoint us like Mary J did :S

If you recorded the conversation, just post it.

      @Darnell used my comments.. LOL

I have a lot of faith in her upcoming project. I have a feeling she will work with K.Row, Beyonce, MJB. Waiting for those r&b soul ballads

@Robert Correction, Trent does not like anything Mariah shits out. Clearly you have not seen his video on Mariah and how he voices his opinions on her music choices. Why even take the time to come on someone else’s blog to be tasteless. Stay where you are on the other blogs that keep it real since Trent’s clearly does not according to you and since you are the authority figure when it comes to who has the best blog. #GetYoLife and get off Trent’s blog with that foolishness!!!

    • MC

@Trent: Is this her official single or buzz single?

    • ni

not with this new single… as much as I love Mariah… she can do so much better. If you are going to do a collabo pick better artists.. but I’m sure this people were cheap so I understand. I’m going to need Mariah to come up with a else. It’s amazing everyone wants to say R&B but you can’t if you continue use Gimmicks and R&B customers continue to download things for free. Labels need to do better with leaks I have never heard or seen Maroon5 leak or Pink. Unfortunately, labels do not see R&B as big money makers.

Didn’t Bey already do that with “4?” Actually not trying to be nasty to Mariah or anything, but 4 was a pretty good turn for Bey. It didn’t do well on the charts as far as singles go because it wasn’t that type of album. I hope Mariah puts out something good. I liked Emancipation but it didn’t feel solid through and through. And I don’t see her working with Frank, something about those two wouldn’t really mesh to me but I could be totally wrong. Again, I just want more good music from artists across the board. It’s not even about someone coming back to save the day, just put out good music (not radio mess).

error: I meant these people and come up with something else

I have been a Mariah fan for years. This is a hit song. She got all the parties Meek and Rick Ross to get radio play on these hip hop stations. I say its a win for Mariah. I remember everyone liked Put it Down by Brandy but where is the song? Mariah played her cards right

    • politicallyincorrect

I would also like to add Mariah been in the game 20 years and the fact that y’all even care she got a single out is a achievement

    • Leon

“Triumphant” has Mariah whisper singing while two rappers dominate the entire song. Sucks!

    • Frank

You gotta love Mariah for her integrity. She always stayed true to her initial sounds but always kept it fresh. She never jumped on any musical trend. That’s true for the new song and I love the melody and the message. The rappers keep it fresh. Love the song.

    • WHO KNOW WHAT? MAYBE, R&B IS MARIAH CAREY HERSELF AFTER ALL.

    • I actually really like this whole dance music era that we are experiencing. It’s somewhat of a refreshing sound in comparison to the music that was popular throughout most of the previous decade. First, hip hop completely took over R&B and many artists who did smooth R&B started collaborating with hip hop stars and changing their sound. Then it began to slowly take over the entire pop music scene, until more than half of what contemporary hit radio stations were playing was either hip hop songs or pop songs with a strong hip hop sound mixed in. When I would deejay at events or parties everyone would be requesting these hip hop songs and I would play them but I’d be thinking to myself “How can people dance to these songs”? (And most of the times, they didn’t). It’s nice to hear alot of hits on the radio again with a nice dance beat that actually make you want to dance, and an average person actually can dance to them without being a “hip hop dancer”. For me, I don’t mind a little hip hop mixed in here and there but it’s been many years since I’ve been a true fan of hip hop. On the other hand, I have noticed that there are virtually no smooth R&B hits, or slow love ballads of any kind, on mainstream hit radio these days, so I do think we need to bring back more of the smooth R&B music that you can slow dance to, make love to, and play during a nice romantic dinner. I looked over the Top 40 last week and couldn’t even find one song that would be appropriate for a slow dance. One thing was definitely need to bring back are singers with REAL talent who don’t need to use heavy auto-tune and special effects in order to sound good, and don’t need to lipsync to a track in order to put on a live concert. I like alot of the songs that come out but I have little respect for the artists themselves because I know they are greatly lacking in true talent.

      Great stuff!

    • Musiclove

She’s not going to revive R&B if her album is rapper heavy and the songs aren’t any better than her last effort Memoirs…album wasn’t bad at all but not radio friendly either.
